Agents of SHIELD Season 5 Episode 12 Review: The Real Deal

Agents of SHIELD Season 5 Episode 12

This Agents of SHIELD review contains spoilers.

Agents of SHIELD Season 5 Episode 12

It's hard to believe that there have been one hundred episodes of Marvel'due south Agents of SHIELD . It seems like just yesterday that Jeff Loeb hitting the stage at San Diego Comic Con in his Coulson Lives t-shirt and introduced the cast of Marvel'due south inaugural Television serial.

I hundred episodes later, Marvel has turned a cast of unknowns into some of the most beloved characters in the MCU. For five years, fans take fallen in beloved with and had their hearts cleaved by Coulson, May, Fitz, Simmons, Mack, Yo Yo, Hunter, Morse, and yes, even Ward. Fans have traveled to the future, to Hell, to a virtual reality, and to distant galaxies in a show that has been far bigger than anyone could accept dreamed.

And yes, there accept been bumps forth the way as Agents of SHIELD has taken a different form than originally promised. At starting time, fans were expecting a serial that would tie directly into all the flick happenings of the MCU and feature film characters bouncing in and out. And nosotros got that for a bit what with Nick Fury and Lady Sif stopping by for some Television set fun, but by and large, the series has been about turning the main cast into Marvel legends.

This week's 100thursday episode is evidence that this fable making has worked. In that location was so much emotion this week as Coulson and visitor struggle to close a tear in the fabric of reality and save the day 1 more time. And it centered on the human being that information technology all began with- Phil Coulson.

Recollect when Agents of SHIELD debuted, it was not as well long afterwards the original Avengers picture. Loki had stabbed Coulson and there was a Coulson Lives! movement sweeping fandom. There were tons of rumors that Coulson would exist turned into the Vision (in the days before JARVIS was turned into the Vision) as fan theories ran rampant. Suddenly, Curiosity announced that there would exist a new series on ABC focusing of Phil Coulson and everyone was like, "Huh?" But now, 5 seasons after, Coulson has lived in our hearts and minds forth with residual of his team.

Which is why information technology hurt so much to nigh lose him this week. On the 100th episode, Coulson reveals his ailment to his team. Turns out, when Phil agreed to take on the mantle of the Ghost Passenger last flavor, he undid the alien tech that cured him from Loki's wound.

Coulson is dying again, but before he goes, he has ane more mission. Using 1 of Fitz's doodads, Coulson has to close a breach in time and space that leads to a fear dimension. The fright dimension conceit allows Marvel to bring dorsum some Shield favorites. The Host, Deathlok, Lash, and more than all return this week every bit Coulson and visitor must face up their greatest fears to save the world ane more time. Viewers must also face up their greatest fears every bit information technology seems similar Coulson will once again be taken. It hurt when information technology happened in film, and it will hurt when it happens on TV. But Coulson, dying or not, is ever upwards to the chore.

I really dig how the special 100th is more of a self-independent episode. The series takes a break from the Billow of Worlds, General Unhurt, Kree storyline to simply allow us to spend some time with Coulson and company every bit they save the world and remind u.s.a. why the world needs SHIELD. Think nigh it, the SHIELD introduced in Iron Man and Avengers has pretty much been broken since Captain America: Wintertime Solider , but it'southward really been stronger than e'er on TV thanks to a very special group of agents.

This calendar week, every bit Coulson prepares to come across his death, he reminds his squad that they have to keep fighting for the legacy of SHIELD. And fight they did, Deke went out of the bunker to get some reinforcements as Fitz and Simmons scienced the crap out of the trouble. Coulson has to venture alone to seal the breach and take on the fear delusions of past foes.

Coulson confronts a simulated version of Mike Peterson as J. August Richards makes a welcome return to the series. But this is not a happy reunion, at least not at outset, as the faux Peterson shows Coulson the managing director'southward greatest fearfulness- the prospect of nothing since Loki's assault existence real. Peterson tries to make Coulson believe that all the events since Agents of SHIELD arrived have been a delusion. Coulson buys into information technology for a moment until the real Peterson, Deathlok his ain damn cocky, arrives and helps his former boss.

Coulson seals the breach and is still with the states- for at present. Sadly, he is still dying and I'grand certain nosotros volition have some tears to shed at a later on engagement. But for now nosotros take tears of joy as the episode ends with the events all SHIELD fans have been dying for since day one – a nuptials. Earlier Coulson goes to seal the breach, he makes Fitz promise him something. And we all know what that is. Yes kids, Fitz and Simmons tie the knot! After all these years of getting pulled autonomously, Coulson pulls Fitz and Simmons together and the future of SHIELD is secure with their union.

How practise we know? Because during the ceremony, Deke reveals that Simmons' wedding ceremony ring is identical to his mother's, so yeah, Deke is the product of Fitz and Simmons' matrimony. Didn't run across that coming did you? Unfortunately, this info comes to the attention of General Hale likewise, so let'south savour the dear while we can.

All in all, shocking reveals, a pleasant trip into nostalgia, and an intense mission all remind us why this show has endured. Here's to another 100 and let's say it one last time because we may non exist able to say information technology whatever longer- Coulson Lives!!!

Marvel Moments

The Fear Dimension is an established nether realm in the Marvel Universe. Information technology was first mentioned in Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme #31 (1991) by Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, and Tony DeZuniga. Some notable fear entities that make the Fear Dimension their abode include D'spayre, the Dweller-In-Darkness, Kkallakku, Lurking Unknown, Nightmare, Nox, and Straw Man. Nightmare is Curiosity's chief fear entity and I'm a little surprised he didn't pop up in this episode. Could Marvel be saving this famed Medico Foreign foe for a future Medico Strange flick? Whatever the case, it is pretty cool to see Agents of SHIELD be able to play around with a long time Marvel horror staple in its milestone episode. And yes people. I was able to spell Kkallakku without looking information technology upward. Fear me.
